Sharing more than a table
Sharing more than a table
After finishing my morning at Playgroup, I headed off to the shops, marking time until my 2.30 appointment. I decided to have lunch there, and shared a table with someone else. I really wanted to ignore the little old woman, ‘tick the box’ on my list of things to do, and return a phone call. But I also felt I should talk to the lady.
I knew that gnawing feeling was God, I’ve felt it before. So I start chatting to the well-groomed and articulate 82-year-old about her ailments. I identified with her problems, having a few myself.
“It really sucks getting old, eh?” That was probably politically incorrect, but she heard my heart.
I think she was polite and ignored this. My heart wanted her to get better, not just for now, but forever, she was so sweet. Immediately, I thought about heaven and how we would have perfect bodies there.
I ask her whether she is a child of God, cause when you are in heaven your bodies are perfect. She wasn’t, I kept going, why stop there? I didn’t want her to think that it wasn’t about Jesus.
I mentioned how you need to know him, “and that’s all I have to say about the matter,” I kept my preaching to a minimum, I didn’t want to overwhelm her.
I’m not sure whether she really heard me, but we chatted for a little while longer about her family. However, my appointment was fast approaching and I needed to go. But just before I do….
I asked her, what her name was, as I got up and grabbed her frail little hand.
“Kathy”, she says.
“Kathy, I am going to pray for you, cause I want you to see you again, in heaven, with a perfect body. Remember Jesus,” I held back the tears, I was touched by her beautiful glistening eyes.
Off I trotted, bumping into a Playgroup mum, and made ‘a date’ to chat with her for the following week.
Most times I’m not so bold at Playgroup, you see, I get to chat with them every week. But this lady, she was teetering on the edge of eternity, I thought I’d give her a ‘push’ in the right direction. Pretty sure that’s why God had me there.
